Work out how long an electric car takes to charge, what each charge costs at home or on a public charger, and how far it will go.
Charging maths comes down to three numbers: the energy you add in kWh, the power of the charger or the car's own limit in kW, and the price you pay per kWh. Each calculator here keeps those apart, so you can see whether the charger or the car is the bottleneck.
Home charging prices default to the Ofgem price cap, which you can replace with your own off-peak EV tariff. A home chargepoint must be installed by a qualified electrician and, in the UK, meet BS 7671.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out EV charging time?
Divide the energy you need to add in kWh by the charging power in kW, using the lower of the charger rating and the car's own limit, then allow for losses and slower charging near full. Adding 40 kWh at 7.4 kW takes a little over 5 hours.
How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?
Multiply the kWh drawn from the wall, including charging losses, by your price per kWh. At the October 2026 Ofgem cap of 26.32p, 44 kWh from the wall costs about ยฃ11.58; an off-peak EV tariff can cut that sharply.
Do I need an electrician to install a home charger?
Yes. A fixed home chargepoint is electrical installation work and must be installed by a qualified electrician; in the UK it must meet BS 7671. The installer also checks whether your supply and consumer unit can take the extra load.
