This winter fuel payment calculator estimates how much Winter Fuel Payment you will get for winter 2026 to 2027 and how much HMRC will take back if your income is over £35,000, for pensioners and their families in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It applies the GOV.UK amounts by date of birth, household, qualifying benefit and care home status, and it shows what each person in a couple keeps.
Quick answer: A winter fuel payment calculator applies the GOV.UK rules for winter 2026 to 2027. You must be born on or before 27 June 1960. Payments are £200, or £300 if born before 28 September 1946, with lower amounts for couples and care homes. If your own income is over £35,000, HMRC takes the whole payment back.

What Is a Winter Fuel Payment Calculator?
A winter fuel payment calculator is a tool that works out your likely Winter Fuel Payment from your date of birth and your circumstances in the qualifying week, then checks whether HMRC will recover it through tax. For winter 2026 to 2027 the qualifying week is 21 to 27 September 2026, and the amount depends on who you live with and whether anyone in the home gets Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
The calculation has two steps. First, the payment amount comes from the GOV.UK table of how much you’ll get. Second, if your total income for the tax year is over £35,000, the amount kept is zero, because the payment is taken back in full rather than reduced gradually.
How Do You Use the Winter Fuel Payment Calculator?
- Choose where you usually live. Scotland has its own scheme and people living abroad are excluded.
- Enter your date of birth.
- Say who you lived with during 21 to 27 September 2026: alone, with someone else who is eligible, or in a care home.
- Choose whether you, or you and your partner jointly, get Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related ESA.
- If you live with someone, enter their date of birth and their income so the tool can show their payment as well.
- Enter your expected total income for the tax year, then read your payment, the amount HMRC takes back and what the household keeps.

How Much Is the Winter Fuel Payment for 2026 to 2027?
The Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026 to 2027 is between £100 and £300, and most people living alone get £200, or £300 if born before 28 September 1946. GOV.UK sets two age bands by date of birth, so the winter fuel payment calculator asks for a date rather than an age.
| Your situation in 21 to 27 September 2026 | Born 28 Sep 1946 to 27 Jun 1960 | Born before 28 Sep 1946 |
|---|---|---|
| Living alone, or no one you live with is eligible | £200 | £300 |
| You get a qualifying benefit (not a joint claim) | £200 | £300 |
| Joint benefit claim with your partner (one payment) | £200 if both in this band | £300 if one or both born before 28 Sep 1946 |
| Living with someone eligible, no benefits, other person in the younger band | £100 | £200 |
| Living with someone eligible, no benefits, other person born before 28 Sep 1946 | £100 | £150 |
| Living in a care home | £100 | £150 |
Qualifying benefits for these amounts are Pension Credit, Universal Credit and income-related ESA. When two eligible people share a home without those benefits, each person gets their own payment, so the household total is £200 when both are in the younger band and £300 in the other two cases. The tool shows both payments side by side.
Who Is Eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment This Winter?
You can get a Winter Fuel Payment for winter 2026 to 2027 if you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. GOV.UK lists several exceptions on its eligibility page:
- you usually live outside England, Wales or Northern Ireland, or were only visiting during the qualifying week
- you were in hospital getting free treatment for the whole qualifying week and the year before it
- you need permission to enter the UK and your leave says you cannot claim public funds
- you were in prison for the whole qualifying week
- you live in a care home, get Universal Credit, Pension Credit or income-related ESA, and lived in the care home for the whole time from 29 June 2026 or earlier
People living in Scotland cannot get a Winter Fuel Payment. GOV.UK says they might be eligible for Pension Age Winter Heating Payment instead, which this winter fuel payment calculator does not estimate.
What Happens if Your Income Is Over £35,000?
If your total income is over £35,000, HMRC takes your whole Winter Fuel Payment back; there is no taper. Total income means the income you expect to receive in the tax year before any deductions, and your partner’s income does not count towards yours.
The GOV.UK income over £35,000 guidance says HMRC usually collects the amount through your tax code, and if you complete a Self Assessment return it is added to your tax bill instead. The GOV.UK opt out page says opting out for 2026 to 2027 has now closed, and opting out for 2027 to 2028 opens on 21 December 2026.
The £35,000 line works as a cliff edge. Example: income of exactly £35,000 keeps the full payment, while £35,001 loses all of it, because GOV.UK uses the words “over £35,000”. Couples are tested separately, so one partner can keep their payment while the other repays theirs, and the winter fuel payment calculator shows both results.
Worked Example: A Couple With Different Incomes
Example: a couple share a home in Cardiff during 21 to 27 September 2026. One partner was born in 1952 and has a total income of £38,000. The other was born in 1944 and has a total income of £20,000. Neither gets a qualifying benefit.
- Both were born on or before 27 June 1960, so both are eligible and each gets their own payment.
- The partner born in 1952 is in the younger band and lives with someone born before 28 September 1946, so gets £100.
- The partner born in 1944 is in the older band and lives with someone in the younger band, so gets £200.
- £38,000 is over £35,000, so HMRC takes back the full £100 from the first partner through their tax code.
- £20,000 is not over £35,000, so the second partner keeps £200. The household keeps £200 in total.
The winter fuel payment calculator gives the same result when you enter these dates and incomes. To see how far £200 goes towards a winter bill, compare it with the running cost of a heater in the electric heater running cost calculator, or add up your appliances with the energy consumption calculator.
When Is the Winter Fuel Payment Paid?
GOV.UK says most eligible people will be paid in November or December 2026, and most are paid automatically after a letter in October or November. GOV.UK also gives a Winter Fuel Payment Centre helpline, 0800 731 0160, for anyone who needs to contact the service.
The payment is a contribution to heating costs rather than a full bill. For a sense of scale, the Ofgem price cap for 1 October to 31 December 2026 sets gas at 7.97p per kWh, so £200 buys about 2,509 kWh of gas before standing charges. Our energy price cap calculator shows the cost of your own usage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is the Winter Fuel Payment in 2026?
For winter 2026 to 2027 it is between £100 and £300. Most people living alone get £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, or £300 if born before 28 September 1946. Couples without qualifying benefits and care home residents get £100 to £200 each.
What is the age limit for the Winter Fuel Payment 2026 to 2027?
You must be born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales or Northern Ireland. The higher £300 rate is for people born before 28 September 1946. Your circumstances during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026 set the amount.
Does my partner’s income affect my Winter Fuel Payment?
No. GOV.UK says your partner’s income does not count towards your total income. Each person who gets a payment is tested on their own income, so one partner can keep their payment while HMRC takes back the other partner’s payment.
Is the Winter Fuel Payment reduced gradually above £35,000?
No. If your total income for the tax year is over £35,000, HMRC takes the whole payment back, usually through your tax code or your Self Assessment bill. Income of exactly £35,000 is not over the limit, so the payment is kept.
Can I get the Winter Fuel Payment in a care home?
Yes, usually £100, or £150 if born before 28 September 1946. You are not eligible if you get Pension Credit, Universal Credit or income-related ESA and lived in the care home for the whole time from 29 June 2026 or earlier.
Does this winter fuel payment calculator work for Scotland?
No. People living in Scotland cannot get a Winter Fuel Payment. GOV.UK says they might be eligible for Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, which is run separately and has its own rules, so check the Scottish scheme directly.
