Solar Angle & Orientation Calculators

Find out how much your roof's tilt and direction matter. These tools show the best angle for your latitude and how close your own roof gets to it.

Most popular

In the UK and much of northern Europe the best fixed tilt for yearly output sits roughly in the 30 to 40 degree range, and a south facing roof gives the most energy. The good news is that the yield curve is flat near the optimum, so roofs a little off the ideal still perform well.

Use the angle calculator for tilt and seasonal adjustment, and the orientation calculator for east, west and split roofs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best angle for solar panels in the UK?

For most of the UK the best fixed tilt for yearly output is roughly 34 to 40 degrees, rising slightly further north. Typical pitched roofs of 30 to 45 degrees are close enough that the loss is small.

How much do east or west facing panels lose?

The Energy Saving Trust says east or west facing panels generate about 15 to 20% less than south facing ones. An east and west split can still suit homes that use more power in the morning and evening.

Should I adjust my panel angle by season?

Adjusting tilt twice a year can add a few percent of yearly output on ground or frame mounts, but it is rarely practical on roofs. The angle calculator shows the gain so you can decide whether it is worth it.
